I’m based in the UK and I just joined Cheap Slap, it has been very interesting to find the cosmetics suppliers both in the UK and US. However I have come across quite a lot of wholesale makeup job lots (200+ items) of big name brand cosmetics on eBay which on the face of it look like bargains but I know the old adage of “if it’s too cheap to be true then it usually is” so what are the thing to look out for, like asking about if they are in date, designated for overseas markets with foreign writing etc., but how do you know if they are illegal copies or substandard items, seconds etc. before laying out the cash?.

If they are genuine then where are the sources of these as it would seem there is a lot of overstock, bankrupt stock around at the moment.

In a nutshell, eBay is very dodgy these days. Loads of fakes. You can’t tell till you get the stuff because they can easily display pics of the real thing and post you something else. A lot of fakes are very good, but on eBay it’s likely to be quite noticeable once you get the goods – spelling mistakes on packaging, and often they are selling things that MAC don’t even make. Feedback is not a always a good barometer either, as a lot of people don’t care if something is fake as long as it has the logo. Others may just not recognise that the item is fake anyway.

But even being nice and assuming a lot of the deals are genuine, the danger of big mixed deals is that you will get a lot of junk thrown in – mostly damaged or missing packaging, tatty GWP items, and out of date stock (sweaty lipsticks, dried up mascaras etc). You could find a lot of it unsaleable.

But of course there is still the overstock/liquidation market which is genuine – this used to go directly to the clearance merchants, now you see a lot of it in discount stores like TK Maxx and TJ Hughes, and the designer discount websites, but also the clearance houses themselves are selling direct on eBay.

So really the deals could be any of the above possibilities. The answer is you don’t know unless you can get the information from the supplier and somehow are able to verify if they are a bone fide clearance agent.

There seems to be a few rumours going around that there are restrictions on selling wholesale MAC make up, and people are wondering if it is just MAC that has these restrictions or other major cosmetics and beauty brands too.

I am not a lawyer, so this is just my own view. There is no restriction that I am aware of that you need to worry about if you are selling authentic goods, and that goes for wholesale MAC make up as well as any other brand. If there was, then eBay would go out of business. However, where they could try and get you is on copyright infringement, so you need to make sure that you use your own photos online, not photos taken from the MAC website or other official sources.

My thoughts on this are that if MAC are going to start cracking down on people, they would be starting with the numerous Chinese websites selling fake MAC cosmetics. On that basis I do not see why any honest seller selling authentic beauty products on a small scale should have anything to worry about. I have never come across anyone getting into any trouble.

Re market stalls though, do check with your council if a license or permit is required.

If possible, you should always compare with an original product bought from MAC. There will usually be a colour variation. Check the packaging for spelling mistakes and that the product number is correct. A lot of fake batches all have the same product number even on different products. Also, check the colour exists in the official MAC range. Depan the product and look at the bottom of the pan, as some originals have codes there which the fakes do not. Finally, if you are really not sure take it to a MAC counter and they should be able to tell you.

Fake cosmetics are getting better all the time – it can be very difficult to tell in some cases, even if you are very experienced. But if you are tempted to use a really cheap source for MAC, like one of the many Chinese MAC makeup sites, then you can safely bet it is fake anyway.

If I were you, I would aim towards establishing your own makeup and beauty website or blog in the future, but the timing for that should preferably be once you already have an established list of customers.

The cosmetics brands you sell depend largely on your customer base, so spend some time really thinking about that and asking around friends what makeup, skincare and other beauty items they would like to buy from you if you could get the wholesale beauty stock.

You could wait and try and get about £200 together in which case there are several great UK suppliers to get started with. You can get a really wide variety of products for that amount as they allow you to buy many single items and or else low multiples e.g. 3 of each item.

If that is not possible then within your budget you could go for some of the cheaper suppliers for lower end brands. You should find a few easily on Google. These suppliers do not sell high end cosmetics brands like MAC or Benefit, which is why I do not include them on Cheap Slap, but for a small budget you could get quite a lot of lower priced items.

I would suggest that you try to stick to the better known names that you can buy on the high street e.g. you should be able to get Maybelline and L’Oreal makeup products, and also Rimmel, Max Factor, Bourgois, and some Ruby and Millie as well. If you want to get a reputation for being a beauty seller with classy products, steer clear of the really awful stuff (Constance Carroll etc). Set your standards high from the start with a nice range of cosmetics and skincare stock, and then upgrade to more expensive brands as you reinvest your profits.

DO NOT try and start selling your items on eBay – please promise me that. Your small profits will get eaten up by fees, as the fees are a much higher proportion of the profit when you are selling lower value items. Try and sell to friends or the girls at work, or at a car boot, or a local fair etc.

On such a small budget, if you are based in the UK then I would also avoid the US sellers for now. If you check the US deals you will see many small lots that you will be able to afford, but the shipping cost is just not worth it for really small orders.

Here are a few suggestions and tips…

I you need a core stock of items to get a makeup website started, you will find several good UK wholesale suppliers if you decide to join Cheap Slap.

1. Authentic MAC brushes never appear wholesale. Other MAC cosmetics products do, but not brushes, they just don’t.

2. With one MAC brush retailing at an average of say £20 (I know some are cheaper but some are a lot more) that would make these brush sets 80%-90% off RRP. It’s just not possible. These brushes may look good, but they won’t be from MAC.

3. The site is registered in Bangkok. Hmmm.

4. The other products on the site e.g. the clothes and belts etc., are about the most widely faked items out there – Ralph Lauren shirts, Burberry belts, Armani, Diesel etc. Which is making me think, why would their MAC makeup be authentic when they have all this other junk on there too? Laughable.

5. The sheer quantity of all the MAC items – again not possible. They could never get a wholesale MAC cosmetics haul like that unless it came from a factory. I just do not think it was the MAC factory.

I do not condemn anyone for believing sites like these because I admit it, the products look great. And some of you may be happy to buy them even if they are not real, for some reason which I do not fully understand.

At the end of the day I cannot say for sure because I will not be ordering from this site, or any others like it. I do not feel the need to send a whole pile of money to these people to see what I will receive, just to see if I am right.

There are basically 3 options:

1. Go to a web designer and get a cosmetics site with a shopping cart built. This is probably the most expensive option, but depending on your budget you could get great, professional looking results. Quotes typically start from around £500 ($750) up, although the sky really is the limit. In general I think this option is usually way overpriced for newbies.

2. Get your own domain and hosting and an ecommerce package and build your makeup site yourself. This can be difficult for anyone with no or little technical skills. However, if your technical skills are good, or you know someone who might be able to help you, such as a college student, then this can be a very cost effective solution. It is possible to buy ready made website templates which can be personalised by changing the colours and graphics etc. Even though you will probably not get a totally original site, this option is much cheaper and definitely worth considering.

3. There are a lot of companies with ecommerce platforms from which you can basically rent a site. They usually have a range of templates that you can choose from which can also be customised. They typically will charge you a monthly fee and they may also charge a set up fee and a transaction fee, based on a % of the value of the sales you make on the site. They provide pretty much everything you need within the package. For this type of company, search on Google for “ecommerce provider” or “ecommerce solution”. When choosing a provider, weigh up the fees and also any minimum contract period. If it does not work out you do not want to have to pay a monthly fee for a site you are not using any more.

Well for me that’s like asking how long is a piece of string. There are so many variables to consider that it’s not as easy as just saying oh yeah definitely MAC, or Benefit, or whatever. I can understand people’s enthusiasm and impatience to get started and they just want to buy a load of wholesale cosmetics stock and get selling. Unfortunately, all too often people rush into an eBay beauty business and end up losing money.

The truth is that you can sell any wholesale makeup brands on eBay, because there will always be a buyer at the right price. However, to be a successful and profitable cosmetics and beauty products seller on eBay, you really need to go through the following exercise for anything you are planning to sell.

First of all, check out what other items the same are already listed on eBay, watch a few and get an idea of the likely selling price if you were selling them. You can watch Buy It Now items as well as auction items and see how quickly they sell. On Buy It Now items, you will also often notice the seller changes the price regularly – that is a sign they are constantly checking out the competition too.

Then, based on the likely selling price, work backwards and take off eBay fees and Paypal fees (there are online calculators which can work this out for you), then deduct the cost of the item to you which will give your profit. If you are happy with that, then go ahead – list the items on eBay and sit back and wait.

Obviously, cosmetics Items which are hard to find command a premium – e.g. Prescriptives which have closed down so there are still people trying to get their products, and also brands like Bliss which are hard to find wholesale but are sometimes available at a good discount on sites like BrandAlley. But obviously if a massive amount of Prescriptives suddenly becomes available it would not be so valuable. Sorry not to be more specific but it is the basic laws of supply and demand (yawn, boring I know).

For any new eBay sellers out there, you should be aware that eBay are restricting the amount of items and relistings that new sellers can make at the start. So you will not be able to sell much at the beginning because eBay will not let you list everything. It is a precaution to stop new sellers offloading multiple quantities of fake cosmetic items in a short space of time before they get caught and their eBay account is closed down. Which in the long run is good for everyone, but it is frustrating for genuine sellers.
