It’s obvious that you don’t slap on loads of foundation if you are going for a fresh-faced, natural look. But for those of us not blessed with perfect skin and who need a little help achieving “no makeup makeup”, follow these basic ground rules for some help.

Exfoliate regularly to get rid of dead skin cells. Your skin will immediately look brighter.

For a glowing finish, make sure you hydrate your skin by moisturising regularly. If you have time, try a nourishing mask for deeper hydration. Also, drink loads of water (little and often is best).

Makeup artists use a luminous makeup base for that inner glow impression. You can easily achieve this at home by using a luminous make up base or foundation primer before applying foundation.

Spots and dark circles can strike the best of us (just look at Kate Moss on a bad day). Mask any skin blemishes or imperfections with concealer, not foundation. Spots, blemishes, and the the nose and chin area usually need the most attention. Application with a brush will achieve a better finish, and you can set by patting with the tip of your finger.

The new super foundations also combine skincare with colour, with ingredients including brightening complexes, pore minimiser and even with the bonus of delectable scents.

If it all seems too complicated (and expensive), the good news is that some brilliant foundation products are available from high street brands – try Max Factor Second Skin, or Dreamy Creamy from Maybelline.
