If you are just starting out selling cosmetics on eBay, you may be wondering whether it is better to list your items as Auction or Buy It Now style listings.

My advice would always be to list wholesale cosmetics and beauty items as Buy It Now (BIN). The eBay marketplace is evolving and is getting more and more like a regular website. Many people looking for a certain item often just want it quickly, and are willing to pay a little more to get it immediately, rather than wait until an auction ends.

The other advantage of using BIN is that you get to set your final selling price. Personally I never bother using the Best Offer feature, because people just send you really stupidly low offers that are just a waste of your time to even to bother to reply to.

There seems to be an urban myth going round that most eBay newbies may have heard, that it is always best to use Auction style listings with a 99p start price, that end on a Sunday evening…er, excuse me while I yawn and scratch my head. Sorry, but that is total BS!! If you believe that, it is at your own peril! 99p auctions rarely achieve a high selling price for run of the mill cosmetics items, and you are more likely to end up losing money. If you insist on using the auction format, then always start the auction at a higher price, and ideally a price at which you will not make a loss if you only get one bid.

Something else to bear in mind is that many buyers on eBay automatically assume that eBay prices are always cheaper than elsewhere, without doing proper research. There are many sellers on eBay selling at full retail price, or even higher! Finding the right price level for any product is crucial, so while it is essential to experiment with several price points, do not be afraid to aim high to test the market – you can always drop your price later. If you have an in demand makeup, perfume or cosmetics product, and good feedback, people are willing to pay a fair price.
